Are you teaching a course for the first time? Or are you seeking more guidance on what to do to set up your class? Are you concerned about your exams being both fair and rigorous? Are you wondering how to effectively work with your TAs, with possibly reduced TA support?

We invite new instructors to join this workshop designed to help you prepare to teach and adapt your course, whether you are new to teaching or new to teaching a large enrollment course. Be prepared to discuss course and grading structure, syllabus design, managing student questions, engagement in a large class, getting ready for the first day of class, and strategies for working effectively with TAs. This workshop provides practical frameworks and institutional guidance to help you feel confident in the classroom.

By the end of this workshop you will be able to:

  1. Identify and start working through resources to support logistics around teaching for the first time, including getting microphones, making copies, setting up Bruincast, setting up BruinLearn site, etc.
  2. Reflect on how you want to structure the course in ways that engage and support the learning of all students (e.g. active learning in large lecture courses, how to use discussion sections)
  3. Begin determining how you want to set up TA expectations and communication, including how to effectively use discussion sections
  4. Explore ways to design assessments that reflect student learning and that students feel more prepared for
  5. Create a welcoming learning environment on the first day of class
  6. Adapt your syllabus and course resources to streamline communication

CEILS is here to help! This Zoom workshop is specifically designed to support you in getting ready to teach in the coming quarter, including anyone teaching your first large enrollment course. In addition to having resources around logistics and BruinLearn setup, we’ll also discuss course and grading structure, syllabus design, how to manage student questions and engagement in large classes, getting ready for the first day of class, and discussing tips on how to work effectively with TAs.

When?
