SUMMARY:Fostering Curiosity: CEILS Annual Faculty Teaching Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This year\, our annual workshop will focus on approaching your teaching with curiosity as a way to manage the highs and lows in the classroom and prioritize our well-being. Our goal is to provide you with resources\, concrete strategies\, and practice to maximize student success. We invite you to join us and engage in any or all of the three experiences described below: \n\nCome share and discuss strategies for setting up your classroom as a learning community\, designing an inclusive syllabus that provokes curiosity\, and creating assessments designed for equitable learning opportunities.\nEngage with invited instructors\, who will present lightning talks followed by a panel discussion on how they are approaching teaching and meeting the challenges of today.  Those topics include embracing AI within their disciplines\, designing courses to allow for pivot in format if needed\, addressing student wellness needs\, and leveraging technology to reduce workload without negatively impacting learning.\nMeet key leaders at our resource fair social (lunch provided) from across campus that support student success and well-being. You may often refer students to these campus centers so please stop by so you can meet the dedicated folks who serve the campus at the Center for Accessible Education\, Counseling and Psychological Services\, the Career Center\, Undergraduate Research Center\, Library\, and more.\n\nAll are welcome to join this community of caring instructors who are excited to talk about teaching! We especially encourage instructors who either are relatively new to college teaching or who have instructional responsibilities in large enrollment gateway courses for science\, technology\, engineering\, and math (STEM) majors. \nRecord your participation in your dossier as evidence of your efforts to improve teaching and as an activity that helps promote equal opportunity and diversity in education. Such efforts in both categories\, on behalf of all faculty\, are now a recognized component of the promotion and tenure process at UCLA (see APM 210-1\, and Appendix 41). \nRSVP HERE

SUMMARY:Annual Winter BAAE Conversation Series
DESCRIPTION:The CEILS Becoming an Anti-racist Educator (B.A.A.E) Conversations encourages honest and vulnerable dialogue with faculty\, postdocs\, and graduate students around the unpracticed conversations about race and racism. These in-person conversations create space for discussion of one’s own racial identity development\, understanding the implications of our racial identities and other social identities in our academic learning environments (e.g.\, classroom\, clinic/laboratory\, meetings etc.)\, and action planning. Overall\, the goal is to cultivate an environment and practice that celebrates identity and culture while still identifying and working together against inequitable systems. \nThe series will be on the following Tuesdays from 12:30 – 1:30 pm: February 6\, 13\, and 20. We will have light refreshments\, but please feel free to bring your lunch! \nThe topics for each session are as follows. Please visit our website for more information. \n1. Session 1: Exploring Identity\, Privilege\, & Culture \n2. Session 2: Taking Anti-racist Action: Interrupting Microaggressions \n3. Session 3: Taking Anti-racist Action: From Inclusive to Anti-racist pedagogy \nIMPORTANT: Session 1 participation is required to attend either Session 2 or 3.

SUMMARY:48th Annual POD Network Conference
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us this year as we Envision the Future: Developing Equitable Opportunities for Success (Educational Developer success → Instructor success → Student success) at our institutions. The 48th annual POD Network conference envisions what the future of educational development might look like amid rapid changes in our lives\, institutions\, and societies. As educational developers\, we are in a unique position to influence the success of faculty\, students\, institutions\, and our own programs. By seeing our work through these multiple lenses\, we seek a more holistic view of how educational development (see POD definition of Educational Development) can drive and facilitate the ongoing pursuit of equity in higher education. \n\n\n\n\nThe Conference Team has been working to increase access to our conference\, and one of the most effective ways to do this is to again offer online and on-the-ground venues; this year in Pittsburgh. Both experiences will offer the same “session types”—workshops\, roundtables\, the keynote\, etc.—and provide opportunities for deep engagement with teaching and learning while interacting with fellow POD members. \n\n\n\n\nA new feature this year is a day of “hybrid” sessions that allow attendees in Pittsburgh and online to connect and learn together. The keynote speaker presentation will also be live streamed to virtual attendees. We are also offering a “dual venue” option: attend both Pittsburgh AND online conferences for a reduced rate. You will have the option to attend the online sessions as they are presented during the conference (November 14-17)\, or watch the session recordings at a later time. Sessions will be recorded upon the approval of the facilitators and made available for a period of time (TBD) after November 17.
