Effective mentoring is critical to the retention of students in STEM fields and has been linked to greater productivity, research independence, and career satisfaction. In general, mentors do not receive any formalized training in mentoring. More specifically, mentors are unaware of specific issues related to mentoring diverse students.
The Entering Mentoring Training (EMT) Program at UCLA is based on the curriculum developed by the Wisconsin Program for Scientific Teaching called, “Entering Mentoring: A Seminar to Train a New Generation of Scientists” (J. Handlesman et al., 2009). The seminar is supported by the NIH Diversity Program Consortium and is designed for graduate students and post-doctoral scholars who directly mentor undergraduate trainees working on STEM research projects.
The next EMT seminar will occur in Spring 2018 from April 4 through June 13 on Wednesdays from 4 – 5:30 PM.
