Why ‘Alternative’ Careers in STEM Aren’t ‘Alternative’ | ChronicleVitae

Within the echo chamber of the academic sciences resound complaints of shrinking budgets, wars on science, and widespread scientific illiteracy. Yet academia continues to hoard scientific talent. Professors overwhelmingly train their protégés to believe the Ph.D. is only good for achieving one end. It’s a tenure-track job or bust. Any other path is an “alternative,” or a “back-up plan.”
